Make an Exploratory Plan

Not sure of your major? Want to learn more about minors and certificate programs?

Whether you enter IU as Exploratory or you decide to explore options later on, creating an Exploratory Plan or using the Explore Programs tool can help you find majors, minors, and certificate programs that fit you and your goals.

Exploratory is smart. Learn all your options and make a well-informed decision. Students who explore before declaring a major are less likely to change their major.

Exploratory leads to marketable skills. Many Exploratory students are able to broaden their academic credentials with a second major or minors and pursue co-curricular and involvement experiences to build their resume.

Get Started. Whether you enter IUB as Exploratory or you become Exploratory later on, your University Division academic advisor and your career advisor in the Career Development Center are ready to help you get started at any point.

The best way to choose your major is by formulating a plan that will help you to make an informed and thoughtful decision. The sidebar on the left contains links that you will find helpful in devising your plan. Meet with your assigned University Division academic advisor to discuss what steps to take and set a timeline for making a decision.

Ideally, you will be starting your exploration at the beginning of your first semester. A great first step is attending the Majors, Minors, and More Fair during Welcome Week in the fall. No matter when you start, however, you should set a date for each step so that you narrow your options down as much as possible by the time you register for your next term. Then continue with the process with the goal to have your major chosen.
