Description of the video:

Did you know over
60% of undergraduate students change their
major at some point? Advising and Major
Exploration Services is here to help
you find your best fit, from majors and
minors to experiential learning opportunities
and more. We have academic
advisors who can help you answer
the big picture questions, and peer
academic coaches who can help with
scheduling classes, finding online
tools, and sharing involvement
opportunities. Ames is located in
Wells Library Suite 002. A big part of
our job is obviously to help exploratory
students figure out what their passions
are and figure out what their majors
should be, but we also do a lot to help
students get into the competitive programs
for Kelley School of Business and the IU
School of Nursing. Another thing we do
is work with students who don't get into
those programs, helping them find
alternative majors. I think that's a pretty
key thing for the great majority of the
students coming into Ames. I think the
word is a perfect fit for exactly what
happens when a student is entering college
for the first time. You want to explore.
You want to learn about something that
you've never learned about before. You
want to discover strengths that you
didn't know that you had. The reason that we
have general education requirements is so
that students can open themselves up to learning
things that perhaps they didn't have
access to in their high school curriculum.
We're really good as academic advisors at
helping you think really strategically about
the courses you take so that you can make
headway on multiple degrees at the same
time and kind of sample them and figure them
out. And so we try to do some strategic
planning to help you feel like you have that
time and that space to explore and to really
find what fits you well. And so we're
there to help do that systematically so that
once you do figure out those pathways that
fit you well, you've still got that graduation
timeline in sight and are well prepared
for it along the way.
