Academic standards requirements

Review of academic records

Academic records are reviewed after grades become final at the end of the fall, spring, and summer term. Determination of academic status is based upon all credit hours completed (transfer and IU graded hours) and cumulative GPA. A student's cumulative GPA includes courses taken at all IU campuses but does not include other transfer work. Replacing a grade using the Extended X policy may affect academic status, but only if the X petition is filed before grades are final. Students will be notified of their academic status via email.

Academic Good Standing

A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher in the University Division is considered Academic Good Standing.

Dean's List

The University Division routinely acknowledges individuals who demonstrate outstanding academic performance Fall or Spring semesters by placement on the OVPUE Dean's List. Qualifying honorees must earn a minimum semester GPA of 3.7 and complete at least 12 graded credit hours.

Academic Probation

All students with a cumulative GPA below a 2.0 are placed on some form of academic probation status. A student must raise their CGPA to a 2.0 or above in order to get back into good standing.

The type of probation a student is on (probation vs. critical probation) is based on the student's cumulative GPA and class standing (in other words, credit hours).

*To calculate credit hours completed, you will need to include your GPA hours (not hours earned) and your transfer hours.

Critical Probation

The first time a student’s IU CGPA falls into the critical probation range, the student is placed in the critical probation process. If the student’s cumulative GPA falls into the critical probation range a second time, the student is dismissed. However, students who have a semester GPA of 2.5 or higher are not dismissed, regardless of their cumulative grade point average.

Students taking coursework at another IU campus will be held to the same standards.

Dismissal

The second time a student’s cumulative GPA falls into the critical probation range (and the semester GPA is not 2.5 or above) the student is dismissed and may not enroll at IU Bloomington for at least one fall or spring semester. The student is also unable to take summer session courses at IU Bloomington.

The only time a dismissed student can enroll at IU Bloomington through UD again is if the student has been reinstated or has earned good academic standing (through another IU campus). After an absence from IU Bloomington for a fall or spring semester or longer, the student may petition to be considered for reinstatement.

Second Dismissal

The third time a student’s cumulative GPA falls into the critical probation range (and the semester GPA is not 2.5 or above) the student is dismissed a second time and cannot petition for reinstatement until a full calendar year has passed.

If a student is able to get back into good standing through coursework taken another IU campus, the student may return without filing for reinstatement.

Termination

The fourth time a student’s cumulative GPA falls into the critical probation range (and the semester GPA is not 2.5 or above) the student is terminated and cannot return to IU Bloomington through University Division.

Special High School Academic Probation

Students that enter IUB with a cumulative GPA below 2.00 due to IU college coursework completed while in high school (most commonly dual credit coursework taken while in high school) are placed on Special High School Academic Probation. Students with this status will not be charged the probation fee, will not be required to take EDUC-X158 The Culture of College, and will not be required to sign a Phoenix Program Agreement. At the end of the matriculation term, students with a status of Special High School Academic Probation will go through the regular records review process and be assigned an academic status according to total credit hours and cumulative GPA. Students with this status will not be dismissed after the first term enrolled through UD.
