I derive much satisfaction from working as an academic advisor by helping students find academic and career areas that truly interest them and by helping them gain the most from their experience in college. I also like to talk with students about developing strategies to deal with issues that may be undermining their academic success. I have worked in student services since 1992 and have been an academic advisor for nearly all of this time.
I have enjoyed working as an academic advisor in different settings. For a few years, I worked as a University Division academic advisor in the residence halls (Teter and Wright) and have also advised continuing University Division students in Maxwell Hall. For several years, I was primarily concerned with working with students who were in an academic probationary status or who were dismissed from IU Bloomington. I value my experience in working for two and one-half years as an academic advisor in the Kelley School of Business because I met with students who were committed to excelling in applying their knowledge of business principles to solving problems.
Since August 2009, I have worked as a health professions advisor in the Health Professions and Prelaw Center, advising freshmen and sophomores who are considering fields such as medicine, optometry, dentistry, and pharmacy. In addition, I meet with students thinking about going on to veterinary medical school and work with students who seek bachelors degrees in certain fields offered by the IU School of Medicine Health Professions Program in Indianapolis. I strive to help these students become thoughtful and well-prepared applicants for professional programs.
Before working as an academic advisor, I was a social worker in a welfare department, a career counselor at IU Bloomington, a sales associate for a retail store, and a rehabilitation counselor with an agency providing services to developmentally challenged individuals.
